Survival Instincts
Okay, this one's not for the faint of heart. On the bright side, Astro, Nico, I finally looked up what yellow eyes on Zhaan mean.

Title: Survival Instincts
Fandom: Farscape
Characters: Stark, Zhaan, John, Aeryn
Time Frame: Very AU 5th season, branching off from sometime before Self Inflicted Wounds.
Spoilers: None really, except for Home on the Remains
Synopsis: Zhaan is hungry. Stark has to make a difficult decision.
Word Count: 634
Rating: R - No smut, just violence.
Warning: Specific warnings would be spoilery, but suffice to say I think this is the darkest, nasiest thing I've ever written. Gory and disturbing and icky. You've been warned.
Disclaimer: Farscape and the characters and settings therin are the property of the Henson Company, and are used here entirely without permission but entirely with respect. This is for love, not for money.
Author's Notes: Written for both the [info]fanfic100 prompt of 013. Yellow, and [info]farscapefriday's "Scare Me Silly" challange.

Survival Instincts

The yellow tufts of pollen fill the air but he breathes deeply, calmly. She is too delirious to notice him, but she will. She will. He chants softly in his mind, preparing himself.

Forgive me, love. I forgive you. Forgive yourself. As you love me, you must forgive us both.

~~~
"Wait, I don't understand! She's eaten a lot more recently then the last time, she shouldn't be sprouting already! Aeryn?"
"It doesn't make sense to me, John. She's progressing exactly the same as before, but faster. I can't explain it"
"I can."
"Okay, Astro, why do I not like that tone?"
"Tell us, Stark."
"Well, as Crichton himself pointed out a weeken ago - she's eating for two."
~~~

The yellow of her eyes has long become pale feral pink. It won't be long before she stirs from her stupor. He has to be ready before then, to do what needs to be done. One life will be lost, and it pains him to contemplate it - but two will go on. He just prays she will forgive him for deciding which two.

Forgive me, love. I forgive you. Forgive yourself. As you love me, you must forgive us both.

~~~
"No, no, Astro, you can't be serious! C'mon, just a few more days, we'll get to somewhere that has food, and they'll both be fine!"
"There's no more time, John. She doesn't have the strength to support herself and the child. I can't cross her over and save the child - it's too young - but I could trigger her into re-absorbing the foetus, its energy, and guide the child's spirit over, if there is any yet. That would revive her. It's the only option besides giving her fresh killed meat at this point."
"Oh, cholak..."
"Given the options I'm sure you understand my decision."
~~~

Her fingers stretch and twitch. She's scented him. He swallows, and begins chanting aloud, unbuckling the strap to his mask. He eases it off and allows himself to spill into the room. The light falls over her form and she blinks and snarls in the glare. He notices that the light is not the bright gold it should be but a pale and sickly yellow, as her Stomas are, as her eyes were only a few arns ago. The poison in the spores is taking its toll on him. He'll have to act quickly.

He stretches his hand out to her, beckoning her closer and she moves towards him. He closes his eye and empties his mind of all thoughts but the words he's been preparing.

Forgive me, love. I forgive you. Forgive yourself. As you love me, you must forgive us both.

He is ready, and she is close enough. With a final prayer to the goddess, he plunges the ceremonial dagger into his throat. He gives an involuntary grunt, but he's prepared himself well. There is no pain. He reaches a bloody hand out to her.

"Take. Eat. This meat is freely given. Grow strong and raise our child with love." He knows she can't understand him now, but she'll remember, and he prays it will be enough.

Forgive me, love. I forgive you. Forgive yourself. As you love me, you must forgive us both.

~~~
"I understand, Stark. I'm a mother myself."
"God help me, Astro, so do I. I wish there was another way."
"There isn't. Goodbye, my friends. Think of me, and take care of my family."
~~~

The last sound he hears is the snapping of his own ribs, sharp and loud in his ears. The yellow glow reflected on her face dims and goes out, and then he hears nothing, sees nothing.

Forgive me, love. I forgive you. Forgive yourself. As you love me, you must forgive us both.

Uhm, yeah. Granted, this idea sorta came from one Astro put forward in The Savage, but with (if I do say so myself) a much nastier twist. Happy Halloween, ladies.

*giggles* I'm sorry, the appropriateness of your icon amuses me.

I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I promise I'll write fluffy happy things with plant sex, soon.

Gah!

Stark is being pretty optimistic about the whole forgiveness thing, eh?

Scary, scary, scary.

Uh, Barbeque Stark... owch.

this was very vivid. And, yeah, Stark was awfully calm about the whole thing.

I'm still shuddering but enjoyed it muchly.

this was very vivid.

*grins* Thank you very much. I was afraid it was maybe too vivid, but then I remembered what the Farscapefriday challange was, and that this fit...

And, yeah, Stark was awfully calm about the whole thing.

Maybe that was pushing it, but I hoped it would kinda heighten the creepifying factor - someone smiling peacefully while being eaten alive...

Seemed very Stark to me. :)

I don't like you any more

No, that was good. Poor Starky though.

But, but, I warned you! *pouts* Would reposting sex and kittens make it better?

No, that was good. Poor Starky though.

Poor Starky? Yes, but hey, what about poor Zhaan? That's the part of this that creeps ME out the most.
Jan[info]lil_banik_slave on November 4th, 2005 06:37 am (UTC)
I do predict that she will be a little bit on the upset side upon regaining her senses
LadySmith[info]lady_smith on November 4th, 2005 06:50 am (UTC)
Just a wee bit, yeah. There's a reason this isn't longer than this is.

Or, as Chaz said on Terra Firma - Good god how do you explain that to your kid? "Your father loved you more than life itself... and he was delicious!"
Jan[info]lil_banik_slave on November 4th, 2005 06:58 am (UTC)
*Giggles but tries not to look like she is giggling, so it sort if winds up this wierd snort*
LadySmith[info]lady_smith on November 4th, 2005 07:09 am (UTC)
Pretty much what I did, too.

ew. just ew.

And the crazy bit? I can see it happening.
LadySmith[info]lady_smith on November 4th, 2005 05:12 am (UTC)
If it makes you feel better that about sums up how I feel about this one.

Definately a case of "I just wrote WHAT??"
Sandra M.[info]silne on November 3rd, 2005 10:01 pm (UTC)
Ouch...... very well done. *shudder*
LadySmith[info]lady_smith on November 4th, 2005 05:21 am (UTC)
*grins* Thank you, thank you, thank you! Havn't seen you here before - feel free to roam around reading things of mine that don't involve canabalism or Stark dying - uh, that would be most of them. :)

Eeep! Eep, eep, eep. Wonderfully creepy and shivery though. I knew what was going to happen, and it still made me, well... eep.

I do kind of doubt the others would have just let him do it, though. 'Cause... damn. :)

Yeah, I was gonna have a bit with him having to fight them, of knock them out, but I just wanted it OVER already, you know?

Nope. I'm hard to fake out on this stuff. And there were Cues. :)

but I just wanted it OVER already, you know?

Aww, but angst is for wallowing in! ;)

What can I say, I do have a tolerance level. :)
AstroGirl: kick-ass Zhaan[info]astrogirl2 on November 4th, 2005 06:33 am (UTC)
Of course, now my logic circuits are grinding away, and I keep thinking things like, well, could he maybe have just hacked off a limb? Hey, maybe they could have chopped another one off Pilot; it worked for Kaarvok...

(Oh, am I so going to the special hell. :))
LadySmith[info]lady_smith on November 4th, 2005 06:48 am (UTC)
(Oh, am I so going to the special hell. :))

Yeah, you and the reviewer on Terra Firma who suggested it, too.
AstroGirl: Evil Homer[info]astrogirl2 on November 4th, 2005 04:11 pm (UTC)
Well, at least I'll have company, then. :)

Hmmmm..... I'm thinking there's a "Part Two". A "Number Two" if you will.

He is non-corporeal, after all!

*shakes head*

Sorry. -very silly today.
LadySmith[info]lady_smith on November 4th, 2005 05:25 am (UTC)
My mind is DESPERATELY not trying to make the TASTELESS pun involving "Number Two" that I know you were trying for...

So instead I will snicker at the sick appropriateness of your icon, which is almost as bad of me.
Nanni: Venus with flowers[info]tiamatschild on November 4th, 2005 01:08 am (UTC)
Ooooh, I love it. :D

...In that sick, twisted way I love nasty retellings of fairy tales. *ees* Thanks!
LadySmith[info]lady_smith on November 4th, 2005 05:26 am (UTC)
Yeah, I figured the Author of "In the Orchard" would like this...

:D

High praise, Nanni, thank you.

Sorry I just can't buy it. I watched Farscape during it's first run and I've seen every ep several times since and I just can't buy this whole premise.

I don't see this as a story it's more a snippet. There is no character development and no plot therefore no story. Sorry.

Well, that's your opinion, and you're welcome to it. Everyone's interpretations of the characters are different, I suppose, and whithin mine, I DO find this plausable.

I don't see this as a story it's more a snippet. There is no character development and no plot therefore no story. Sorry.

Yes, well, I personally find that a highly restrictive definition of the term "story" - but everyone's entitled to thier own opinions on that too, and if you prefer longer, more plot intensive stories, with a great deal of character development, there's certainly a lot of them out there for this fandom.

Though I have to add you don't have to apologize for your opinions, and you certainly don't have to feel the need to conceal your identity. It's not like you were rude, and I'd like to think I'm gracious in accepting constructive criticism.

Thanks for your feedback. :)
